Agnela (Nellie) Fischer died peacefully in her sleep at home on February 21 with her family present. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antoinette and Marion Stiglitz, her brothers Marion and Bill, and Kenny, her devoted husband of 68 1/2 years. She is survived by her children Susan (McCracken), Bill, Sally (LaPlante) and Nancy (Fischer), along with six grandchildren and three Great-Grandchildren.
Nellie was born in 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. Her family later moved to the Elkhart area. While attending Jimtown High school, she was a formidable guard on the girls basketball team and was affectionately known as "Hoops" Stiglitz. In 1933 she graduated from Rolling Prairie High School where she was honored as senior class valedictorian. She often recalled to her children that when attending RPHS, she frequently had to walk to and from school though blinding snowstorms, six miles up hill, both ways.
Following graduation, Nellie moved to Elkhart where she took a position at Pickrell's Greenhouse. She and Ken were married in 1940 at St. Vincent DePaul Church. Nellie was a founding member of the Immaculate Conception Study club at the church.
During the 1950s and 1960s Nellie was involved in family life and volunteered as a room mother at St. Vincent School. She and Ken were members of a monthly pinochle club.
Nellie loved IU basketball and was a long-time ND football fan. She began working at Tepe's Catalogue store during the 1970s and was employed there until it closed.
During their retirement years Nellie and Ken travelled extensively throughout the country by car, plane and train to visit family, friends and to see the sights.
Nellie will be remembered fondly for her bright smile, wit, love of life and family, cardinals and a blazing fire in the fireplace .
Visitation will be Thursday Feb. 25, 2010 from 6 to 8 PM with a 7:30 Rosary service at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral home.
